Fat Poppi will exhibit unique lampshades, made from retro fabrics, at the Bayside Design Market.

A new market featuring the best in art and design created by local artists will launch in Brighton this month.

The first Bayside Design Market will be held on Saturday, April 18 and run in conjunction with the Artist in Residence Open Day at Billilla Mansion Studios.

Bayside Mayor Felicity Frederico said the event will give visitors the chance to discuss the creative practice of market stallholders and the artists in residence.

“Visitors to the market will have the chance to meet the designers behind the products and purchase goods that aren’t manufactured on a mass scale,” Cr Frederico said.

The Bayside Design Market will be curated by artist and ceramicist Kristen Halkett, who completed an Artist in Residence program at Brighton’s Billilla Mansion Studios from July 2013 to June 2014.

Illustrator Sarah Darby will showcase fashion-inspired sketches at the market.

Halkett has hand-picked quality designers and artists to exhibit and sell a variety of products including jewellery, ceramics, homewares, textiles, and accessories.

“As curator, I wanted a nice range. There will be a good mix on offer,” she said.

Halkett said the idea for the Bayside Design Market came about following her residency program.

“I felt there was such a gap in the market for a local event like this,” she said.

“Most of the markets I do are in the city or out north but I noticed there was nothing inner south-east, at least none that are specifically a design market.”

The idea grew from there and Halkett worked with Bayside Council to help plan and coordinate the market.

She said the market will contribute to Brighton’s art scene in a positive way.

“From a stallholder’s perspective, they can tap into a new customer base. And, it will bring a lot of locals to the market who wouldn’t normally travel into the city or up north to attend something like this,” she said.

“I’m hoping it will get that groundswell of community support.”

A two-day Bayside Design Market will also be held later in the year, on November 28 and 29, at the Bayside Arts and Cultural Centre in Brighton.
